Softball Splits League Doubleheader with Covenant, 9-7 and 2-4

After scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning in the day's opening game, Meredith held a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. A four-run rally from the Scots pulled the hosts to within two, but the tying run ground into an out at second to end the game in favor of the Angels.
Covenant jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two and held on for the victory in spite of a pair of doubles from White and Saunders in the top of the seventh.
Saunders recorded three hits, including a double in game two, and Artigues earned a pair of singles, including a two-run homer to center. Kayla North earned a pair of singles, and Julia Allsbrook, Erica Occena added one apiece. Covenant's Jordan Brett led the Scots with five hits, eight RBI.
Rookie pitcher Taylor Jackson posted a 1-1 record on the day allowing six earned runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched. Covenant's Cris Gant took the loss in game one, while Tyler Epes notched her second win of the season with a complete game in the nightcap.
The Scots scored first on a two-out double in game one, but the first three Meredith batters in the top of the third, Katlyn Johnson, White and Bucklin, advanced on a walk to get into scoring position. Artigues scored Johnson on a single to left, and Saunders drove in the other two.
Artigues homer in the top of five extended the Angels' lead to four, but a two-RBI double from the Scots' Jordan Brett in the bottom of the frame pulled Covenant to within two.
Meredith responded with a three-RBI-triple from White in the sixth inning, and Artigues scored White to spread the gap. Covenant's four-run rally in the bottom of seven fell short leaving Meredith with a win.
In game two Saunders' seventh inning double gave the Angels a chance, but back-to-back popups cut the effort short for the split on the day.
