MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. - The Meredith College softball team wrapped up a quick spring break trip to Myrtle Beach with a 1-1 record on the day. An eighth-inning single from Brittany Bucklin gave the Avenging Angels a lift in a 5-3 win over Pittsburgh-Greensburg, but Meredith fell short in a 7-1 loss to Gettysburg.
Bucklin sacrificed to score erica Occena in the first inning of the day. Eran Artigues led off in the top of the second with a triple to right, and Janie Robinson drove Artigues home on a single to give the Angels a two-run advantage.
An outfield misstep allowed Pitt to score in the bottom of the frame, and the Bobcats added a second run in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
The score remain unchanged through five, but Artigues moved Meredith ahead with a single in the top of the sixth.
Pitt put runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh on a triple and a walk, and a sacrifice fly from Bobcat Amanda Leschak forced the game into an extra inning.
With Kayla North placed on second, Bucklin's RBI-single to center gave the Angels the lead, and Robinson scored Bucklin to spread the gap for the win.
The Avenging Angels remained on the same field at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex to face off with the Gettysburg College Bullets.
The Bullets jumpstarted the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a third in the bottom of the fifth. A tough sixth inning left the Angels down seven runs and in a must-score situation heading into the seventh.
First baseman Julia Allsbrook drilled a double to to right field, and Maria Annunziata drove her home on a double to center with two outs on the board. But Gettysburg's Aileen Reilly notched her eighth strikeout to end the game early in favor of the bullets.
Meredith's Taylor Jackson posted a 1-1 record on the day with nine K's and six walks.
