Softball Play Day Shows Glimpse of What's to Come

RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith's all-star recruiting class came to play as demonstrated in Saturday's fall play day. The team won two-out-of-three games during the non-traditional season tournament with several totals to highlight.
Head Coach Kim Scavone and her staff welcomed 17 recruits to Meredith this fall, and these underclassmen will join five veterans to form the Meredith Avenging Angels softball team in the spring.
In game one freshman Erica Occena led off with her first-of-four singles on the day, and rookie Brittany Bucklin drove in Occena on a home run to left field. The homer was one of two ripped by Bucklin, as she went five-for-six in her collegiate debut.
Newcomers Katie Kepley and Sarah Watson notched a pair of hits apiece, and Watson added an extra base with one single and one double. Transfer Kayla North scored two runs in her two appearances in game three scoring with one RBI.
The 2014 USA South Player of the Year Amanda White recorded a pair of hits with one base on balls and one run scored. White made a three-inning appearance in the pitcher's circle and helped the Avenging Angels to their second win on the day.
Junior outfielder Courtney Saunders drilled a double to left field in game two, scoring a pair of runs for Meredith, and Alyssa D'Arco went three-for-four on the day. Katlyn Johnson recorded her own double in game three.
Rookie pitchers Kepley and Taylor Jackson combined for the first win, and White teamed up with Jackson for the second. As the tournament progressed, Jackson settled in and tallied 10 strikeouts on the day.
